Out of the Walls

concept and project: Martyna Rajewska, Agnieszka Chromiec /2017

Walls are part of everyday life and yet they have different functions that are fundamentally connected. They divide spaces, organize the movement, set boundaries between different objects and people, frame the nature. Our interest lies primarily in the latter, which can be observed only in the cities with dense urban tissue. In places such as old city of Bologna, where all of the public spaces, squares, roads are organized by the walls of the buildings. The only way to escape the barriers is in the gesture of looking up to the sky.

In our proposal, we focused on finding a way to escape the situation of confinement and closure, Build the place in the heart of the city, where users can learn how to look differently at what already exists. Paradoxically, questioning the existence of walls in the city (creating the space in which walls does not appear), emphasizes their importance in the later perception of the same places.

Proposed structure works on the basis of the site specific principle. We analyzed Piazza Maggiore, Piazza, it height and width and made installation structure correspond to the geometry of this square. The angle of the mirrors is set in a way that audience inside of the structure does not have a visual connection with the surrounding. The only reflection that can be observed in the mirrors is of the sky.

Annual variation
Due to the time of the exhibition the sun will not appear directly in the mirrors of the installation - it does not go upper than 40* above the horizon at this time of the year, so there is no danger, someone will be blinded by the direct sun light.

construction scheme
As we rewrite Mr. Bedford in Infinite Space by Herbert George, imagining the projected situation on Piazza Maggiore, "I shut out the sight of the walls from my eyes, and in a state of mind that was, I now recall, incredibly free from anxiety or any distressful quality, I stopped to begin a vigil in the little speck of matter in infinite space that would last until i retreat from "Out of the walls".
